Amethyst gets its name from the Greek word "amethystos", meaning "not drunken". According to the Greek mythology, Dionysus, the Greek god of wine, was insulted by a human being. So, he swore to take revenge and destroy the first one that would cross his way. It was a young maiden, called Amethystos, on her way to pay tribute to goddess Artemis, which passed-by the first. In order to protect her, Goddess Artemis transformed her into a crystal statue.
Dionysus found this out, he got so sad that he wept tears of wine. These wine tears gave to the crystal its purple color, and so the amethyst stone has been created.
Amethyst was known from ancient times and it was used by ancient Egyptians, Etruscans, Greeks, Romans and Chinese among others. For a long time it was the symbol of love and it was believed that it protected against magic.
